Recognizing that the industrial-based economies of the Democratic West required oil for fuel, The Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadegh, hoped to constrain American and British ability to influence world and regional politics by using Irans vast oil fields as a weapon of economic force. The President of the United States, realizing the potential growth of Communism should US and British influence be curtailed, authorize a covert operation named Ajax to remove Mossadegh from power and install the Shah as the sole authority in Iran. The Operation was successful as it was a period in time when CIA operated under competent leadership to ensure that pump prices at American and Allied gas stations remained low so as not to disrupt the overall economy by depriving citizens of spendable income needed to fuel a consumer-driven democratic society. Authorized for military Active and Ready Reserve service, and applicable civilian agency employment during the Operation Period.
