Awarded For Service During the Operation Period, 6 February to 27 July 1973. To facilitate the possibility that one or more Allied naval operations may be required to prevent North Vietnamese sea-borne aggression against the Republic of Vietnam after the departure of Allied ground combat forces, all previously laid anti-ship mines had to be removed from coastal waters above the 37th Parallel. This Herculean task was achieved by United States naval forces in record time. Supporting vessels contributed to protecting against attack upon mine-retrieving vessels. The coordinated effort was accomplished without casualty.
