Having invaded South Vietnam only two months prior, the North believed they could achieve quick victory by staging three massive campaigns, the largest being the Battle of Kontum intended to split the Republic of South Vietnam in half. However, even using three divisions and over two hundred tanks the North was soundly defeated by Allied forces led by American advisors operating from strategically placed Fire Bases. Allied losses were approximately 1,000 casualties. North Vietnamese losses were calculated to be between 20,000 and 40,000. Awarded for In-theatre service during the Operation Period.
