During the Civil War and Indian Wars the Spur was automatically authorized to all Cavalry members regardless of MOS who participated in combat or an engagement with an enemy. Today the Combat spur is selectively awarded by Cavalry units to individuals based on unit-established criteria either in a testing situation (simulated combat conditions) or by actual, individual combat performance. Criteria varies between testing centers and combat units and may change over time.
