Merchant Marine Combat Bar

The United States Merchant Marine Combat Bar was established by an Act of Congress on 10 May 1943. The award is authorized to any Merchant Marine during World War II who served on a ship which, at the time of such service, is directly attacked or damaged by an instrumentality of war. A silver star device is authorized to be attached to the bar to Merchant Mariners who are forced to abandon ship when so attacked or damaged. For each additional abandonment, an additional star is attached.
